Alicia among mountains on @kodak 120 film. From the 2015 archives 💀🥀🎞 *** Time flies but some things stay the same. I still gravitate to my film cameras in special moments, not because shooting film elevates my work simply because it’s film, but because as an artist, the tools I use to express myself is more of an imprint and telling of who I really am within the images. I’ve been shooting film for 15 years and I never want the medium used to create art to surpass the artist. I never want to feel like the images I create come from a hollow place of insincerity.
I’m glad I work with people who have allowed me to find my own voice and in turn, create something impactful and meaningful to them as well. I’ve always believed that real artists find their own path and rely on their own individual lives for inspiration without the need to focus on other people. I’ve always, at least subconsciously, done my best to avoid imitation in effort to carve out my own identity. In this moment within the mountains, it was hard not to be inspired by what was right in front of my own eyes.

I get asked a lot why I shoot film, and the simple answer is this - it’s really about the mindset it gives me when I’m behind the camera, that’s what creates the images and that’s why 90% of the couples I work with hire me to shoot film specifically. I’ve been shooting film for professional work for nearly a decade now, it’s not something I use as a marketing tool, far from it, honestly it’s just a genuine factor in my photographic process at this point and I’m beyond grateful that I work with like-minded people who appreciate the big picture of my choice to use a specific medium over another. ⠀

2020 will be the year of analog weddings for me no doubt, but it’s important for me to continue to create elevated and honest work that transcends mediums, otherwise I’m just chasing trends instead of continuing to carve out my own identity within this industry. ⠀

Incredibly honoured to be featured on @torontolife alongside @ryannehollies for the beautiful wedding of @queeseandfox in sunny California. Watching them appreciate living in the moment while overlooking the Ocean from a cliff in Malibu was beyond inspiring. Beyond excited to share the analog film from this experience in an upcoming blog post + a little Super 8mm surprise thanks to my father’s hand-me-down Super 8 camera. ⠀

I’ve been shooting film for such a long time now that I don’t think it’s even worthwhile to talk about in my captions anymore, but in reality, this experience and that memory couldn’t be captured in a more genuine way than with the countless rolls of 35mm and 120 film I developed and scanned. ⠀

This image was me pulling out a point and shoot 35mm camera and snapping a genuine moment of aw as I saw the west coast light sparkle in Jackie’s eyes. Shot on @cinestillfilm. 💀🥀 Yah analog film is beautiful and cool, sure whatever, but at the end of the day it’s what’s in front of the camera and the state of mind of photographer that deeply matters. Film is cool but it’s simply a medium used to express an artistic vision, it doesn’t make the vision worthwhile or artistic in any way simply because its film. ⠀

I guess I finally learned something meaningful after shooting film professionally for the last 8 years. ⠀
