Clarissa and Peter Minimalist In-home Session

April 27, 2017

I don't keep up with too many of the current trends in wedding photography but I have noticed an uptick in at-home (in-home?) portrait sessions with couples.  Usually when things trend I don't intentionally seek them out but when Clarissa & Peter approached me with the idea I was pretty intrigued. I mean, when two architects invite you into their personally designed home, you gotta take that opportunity as a photographer.  I couldn't have asked for a more ideal setting, seriously, I'm trying to convince them to rent this place out to me for future personal portrait work.  Anyway, the large windows + white walls created some incredible lighting, it was dream-like, almost hyper-real.  The atmosphere felt like an editorial photoshoot, with hip-hop playing throughout the house's internal sound system.

We were vibing on good tracks and Peter made us a killer pour-over coffee. I felt right at home and got to experience why this place is so meaningful to them and their relationship… it’s a literal work of art they collaborated in creating, something truly special. From there we hit up the weird pants statues that you can see from the DVP here in Toronto. Clarissa & Peter are fans of weird, minimal art, so I used that as an excuse to explore this particular place I’ve always noticed driving home from work back at one of my old photojournalism jobs.

To Sum - good tunes, good coffee, good people, good light,  crazy cool house, cute dog, weird pants statue art,  good times.

Julie and Mike Scarborough Bluffs

March 30, 2017

I got to spend a sunny afternoon in February with Julie & Mike. Being the outdoorsy type they suggested we hangout at the Scarborough Bluffs, the closest thing Toronto has to mountains haha, and I was totally into the idea. My Blundstones were the ideal shoe for our hike that includes sand, mud, dirt, cliffs, grass etc. It’s always great when the couples I work with let go of their hesitation and dive head first into the experience. Julie & Mike’s boots got a few battle scars along the way but in the end it was well worth it since we got to explore spaces and places that few other people were at, giving us a more intimate and freeing experience.

Being by the lake during Golden Hour in the winter can lead to some surreal colours and beautiful scenery. The light was literally golden yellow at one point, and with the moon visible in the super clear skies we were treated to a calm sunset in the midst of the crazy urban chaos surrounding the Scarborough Bluffs. Winter Engagement sessions, lifestyle sessions, whatever you call them, can be so amazing because the weather and light can be so incredibly unpredictable and unique.
