Villa Il Noceto, Tuscany Wedding Shot on Film

As a film wedding photographer, I am constantly in awe of the beauty and intimate moments I get to capture at weddings, regardless of circumstances or location. But at the end of September, I had the privilege of shooting a very special wedding in Tuscany featuring two brides, Lilian & Alexis, two individuals that I’ve created beautiful work with and bonded with over the last few years. Asking me and Ryanne to travel to Italy so we can capture the overall experience of their wedding day made us both excited and nervous in a way that has never happened before leading into a wedding day. In hindsight, when looking back through the photos I quickly realize that the photos had a distinct ability to transport me back to this highly emotional and career defining moment where the people and place equally left a mark on me, giving me new insight into who I am as a person and ultimately as a creative. An experience unlike any I’ll likely ever have again as a film wedding photographer but I’ll do my best to put it all into words which I thought would be impossible given the emotional state I fall into when reliving the memories of the wedding as I look through the photos.

It’s funny because as a former photojournalist people often assume that I’m an expert “fly on the wall” but the reality of what that career taught me was that engaging with people and my surroundings is what really helps tell a proper story through a photo. For the first time, probably ever, I felt like I was back in the old days of shooting for the Globe and Mail or Toronto Star where I was thrown into the fire and was deeply involved in the images I was creating. The wedding photography industry has so many buzzwords and I’ll do my best to avoid them all because this day transcends the concept of traditional wedding day experiences. Being an international wedding photography or luxury wedding photographer have never been my goal and I know the idea of shooting a wedding in Italy is a benchmark for other wedding photographers in the industry but to me, genuinely, this wedding goes far beyond any of that, in fact, none of that stuff is even relevant to the core of the overall experience.

What can I say besides this entire wedding day was a dream. The ceremony was held at the bottom of the stone steps, where guests gathered and sat to witness the exchange of vows in front of the rolling Tuscan hills and vineyards. Not to be outshined, their fluffy pup Miso stole the show as he decided to sit at his mothers’ feet during the ceremony and had a front row seat to their vows and first kiss as a married couple. The wedding was filled with handcrafted details that added to the beauty of the day, such as personally written letters to each guest, a long harvest table outside the villa so everyone could sit together and appreciate the stunning Tuscan backdrop and the incredible sunset during dinner. The two brides didn’t disappoint with two highly stylish looks, Alexis with a beautiful white wedding dress from Kamperett and Lillian ,being the Ying to Alexis’ Yang, wore a black dress to contrast her new wife’s aesthetic. The terms modern bride and anti bride were invented for brides like Alexis & Lillian and they’re the archetypes for cool brides all over the world. The couple had asked all their guests to wear colourful clothing which elevated everyone’s cool and modern style to become an effortlessly iconic part of the wedding day details, not to mention the perfect compliment to the black and white outfits of the brides’.

The atmosphere was enhanced even further by candlelight, the party and conversations went deep and late into the night and early into the morning. As the photographer, I was so engaged in the atmosphere that I went to bed at 6:30 AM, feeling grateful for such a beautiful and intimate experience that gave me the opportunity to connect with like-minded people and engage in deep conversations and dance for hours on end. Rarely do our minds and soul get to feel such a spectrum of feelings that have real impact on us, but this wedding had it in abundance and everyone in attendance can and will agree to that statement.

The use of analog film and our trusted Leica cameras added a nostalgic and timeless quality to the final images. Using these classic tools also channeled a different part of my mind's eye when viewing the experience through my own lens. The limitations of film, such as the need to carefully consider each shot and the unpredictability of the final result, forced me to slow down and truly experience the moment, rather than just capturing it. The end result was a set of images that not only captured the beauty of the day, but also the emotions and atmosphere of the wedding in a truly unique and timeless way. 40+ rolls of film later we’re left with tangible memories of our unique experience of not only photographing a beautifully wedding in Tuscany, but also our own personal memories of what it was like to be there and truly live through the experience as an engaged participant and guest.

As a film wedding photographer, I believe that capturing these intimate and beautiful moments is what makes my job so rewarding, but this experience had a deeper layer to it that was unlike any other wedding I ever photographed. I’m so grateful to have been a part of Lillian and Alexis' special day in Tuscany and I hope that the photographs I took will bring back fond memories for them and their guests for years to come, at least I hope the same level of fondness and nostalgia that I feel when looking through the images.

The feeling of saudade is a complex and profound emotion that is difficult to put into words. A term created and expressed within my Portuguese culture at various facets of life. It is a mixture of nostalgia, longing, and bittersweetness that is evoked when thinking about past experiences or events. In the context of the wedding in Tuscany, the feeling of saudade is heightened by the use of analog film in capturing the images. Film photography has a way of imbuing images with a timeless and emotional quality that digital photography often lacks. The organic and textured feel of the images, combined with the unpredictability of the final result, gives the images a sense of authenticity and emotion that is difficult to replicate with digital technology for some reason.

When I look at the images from Lillian and Alexis' wedding, I am transported back to the beautiful hills of Tuscany Italy, the intimate atmosphere of the ceremony, and the love and joy of the two brides as well as their surrounding tight knit group of chosen family and friends.. The photographs evoke a deep sense of longing for the fleeting and beautiful moments that were captured, but also a sense of gratitude for the privilege of having been a part of such a special day.

Penticton B.C., Super 8 Wedding Video

2022 was chock full of incredible opportunities to create Super 8 wedding videos for over a dozen couples all over the world.

One of the most memorable experiences I ever had creating a Super 8 wedding video was travelling to Penticton British Columbia to collaborate with Laura and David as they hosted their wedding at the beautiful Linden Gardens. There was something magical about the atmosphere of Linden Gardens but ultimately the energy of Laura and David’s friends and family are what truly made the experience unforgettable.

I’ll preface by stating that there was a historic moment for me personally as a wedding photographer & videographer. I actually teared up and cried for the first time in my entire career while shooting a wedding. Typically at weddings I’m pretty much in the zone and focused on creating an authentic image due in large part to being present and empathetic to the events, words and actions of everyone around me. During the ceremony however, after the bride entered to one of my own personal favourite songs, I realized quickly that I was going to be a bit more emotional when witnessing the love and energy of the wedding day. But nothing could prepare me for David’s father reading the lyrics to the song “Wild,Wild,Wild Horses” as an homage to the groom’s favourite song. As his father read the passage in his captivating British accent, he began choking up and his voice began to break and at that very moment I was gotten, I couldn’t help but tear up along with everyone else in attendance. I was so moved by that moment that I absolutely had to include sound bites from that moment within the Super 8 video to help remind anyone who watches just how beautiful that moment truly was as it set the tone for the entire ceremony.

The nostalgic element of Super 8 film was the perfect medium to capture the love and fun that was present throughout the entire day. With the incredible backdrop of rolling hills and mountains that are iconic to B.C. it wasn’t difficult to feel completely captivated by my surroundings. With friends and family travelling from all over the world, predominantly from the U.K. and Alberta, the bride and groom took advantage of introducing their European friends and family to Laura’s Alberta heritage as they all collectively learned to line dance while wearing the quintessential cowboy hat. It doesn’t get more Alberta than that!

I couldn’t be more appreciative of Laura and David’s willingness to fly Ryanne and myself out to the West Coast to capture their wedding on analog film, both for the photos and this video. (Check out the photos here!) - Their wedding details, their looks, the colourful elements spread throughout were perfect and absolutely meant to be captured on the magic of 35mm and Super 8 film. I know that a lot of couples on the West Coast would likely opt for Vancouver wedding videographers but I’m glad I had the chance to experience a new part of Canada and let myself be engulfed by inspiration while capturing the wedding video on Super 8 film.

I got to capture so many Super 8 wedding videos in 2022 but this one was truly special and will be one I remember for the rest of my career.

Gardiner Museum Wedding, Super 8 Film

When Teresa & Jay reached out to me about shooting their wedding video on Super 8 they highlighted the fact that they wanted something nostalgic and fun, something lighthearted with a cinematic flair.  Shooting analog film, especially Super 8, provides layers of all of those elements and there’s something so unique and beautiful about the film that can’t quite be replicated.  Combine that with the down to earth and chill personalities of the bride and groom and you have the perfect opportunity to create something that blurs the lines between cinematic documentary and effortless home movies from our youth.

Although they had their wedding at the Gardiner Museum in downtown Toronto, that wasn’t the only part of the city we got to explore. They wanted to hit up Chinatown and I was all for it. Having spent a lot of my initial years in Toronto living in that neighbourhood I already knew that the natural energy and quirky “Toronto” elements of that area would add something interesting and cool to the Super 8 video.  The bustling streets of Toronto’s Chinatown can’t be matched and Teresa & Jay got to spend some quality time in a part of the city that means so much to them (plus oranges).

The Gardiner Museum was beautifully set up for the ceremony and reception by the fantastic planning team at Lexington & Co. And the bride herself added her own personal touches in homage to her Chinese culture which really elevated the intimate atmosphere. Teresa & Jay’s crew and close circle were present and emotionally engaged during the teary ceremony and everyone just let loose and straight up had fun when the party started. There was something genuine and authentic about the entire wedding day but there isn’t much searching for an answer to find out why. Teresa & Jay are just those kind of people and it was clear that bringing together so many important people in their lives meant so much to them that they wanted to really live in the moment and appreciate what that meant to them by having fun and spreading unconditional love and joy.

I really got to have some creative fun in creating this Super 8 wedding video and I’ve quickly discovered that weddings are the perfect environment to create something deeply emotional and sincere but ultimately it’s working with people like Teresa & Jay that bring a certain energy and trust to really bring it all together. I look forward to create many more of these in the future.

Enjoy this Super 8 wedding film featuring Teresa + Jay.

Soho House Toronto Wedding Shot on Film

I couldn’t of ever envisioned a better way to kick off my wedding season than with the absolute dream duo of Gillian and Evan. They had a simple yet elevated vision for their wedding day and ultimately wanted to gather in an intimate setting at Soho House Toronto with their immediate family to create memories and celebrate their union in style.

Weddings in downtown Toronto can look 1 of a million ways but there was something special and unique about this wedding day experience. Of course, being a Toronto film wedding photographer came in handy as the je ne sais quoi that analog film brings to table elevated the final photos to a place I absolutely love. The nostalgic qualities of the medium went hand in hand with the modern vintage elements of the various wedding details, the bride and groom’s styles and the general vibe of a Soho House wedding.  The cherry on top was that I also had the luxury of shooting a Super 8 film for the bride and groom (stay tuned!) which added a completely new and exciting layer to the entire experience.

Gillian’s look was absolutely incredible. The concept of anti bride and effortlessly cool came together in a nostalgic and fashion forward style thanks to her Hermione de Paula wedding dress and Loeffle Randal shoes that elevated Gillian to trend setter status that any modern bride would look to for all things bridal style and inspiration. Seriously, her flower crown, elegant sleeves and highly detailed dress brought out her piercing blue eyes that literally stops you in your tracks. She was the bride version of the May Queen from the movie Midsommar, and I say that in best imaginable way possible. Just peep the photos and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. The groom’s style wasn’t completely overshadowed though as Evan rocked his maroon coloured suit from Sydney’s Toronto to create a bold look that paired perfectly with Gillian’s whimsical and ethereal aura.

A few weeks before the wedding Ryanne and I had the chance to hangout with Gillian and Evan at Trinity Bellwoods and we created what are some of my all-time favourite couples photos (stay tuned for that also…) There’s something incredibly genuine about these two, and I don’t just say that to fluff the emotional layers that went into creating these images. Legitimately Gillian and Evan are some of the most easy-going and like-minded people I’ve ever gotten to work with. When we met them for drinks at Soho House, during their couples shoot and even during the wedding day, we felt welcomed with a warm kindness as if we were old friends.

These two very tall and beautiful people made the process of taking wedding photos something that was fun and embraced the slower process of shooting film despite the fact we were running around one of the busiest intersections in all of Toronto. Shooting film as a photographer also allowed me to be more calculated and present throughout the wedding, noticing all the beautiful and intricate floral details, appreciating the hand sown lyrics in the bride’s veil, or even the vintage decor and furniture spread around the Soho House. Everything felt right and came together in a way that felt intentional and delicate.

I’ve had so many incredible experiences this year as a wedding photographer and have shot over a 700 rolls of film this wedding season, but without a doubt this wedding has stuck with me even up until now despite it being one of the first weddings I photographed this year.

It goes to show that the genuine connection I make with some couples is what really allows me to create photographs or films that transcend the notion of wedding photography, at least in my perspective at weddings like this I sincerely feel like I’m creating something for people I value and connect with, infusing elements of my own personal experience to (hopefully) create a genuine narrative from all the film and photos.

Enjoy all the film photos and being transported to a nostalgic infused experience.

Wedding on Super 8mm Video

Seems like every week now I’m shooting another wedding on analog film, with Sally & Luke it was no different with the exception that the analog was courtesy of the nostalgia heavy Super 8 film format.

Shooting super 8 video for this wedding was particularly special though. The bride and groom both have a deep personal connection with Super 8 film, using it in both their personal lives and professionally, Super 8 has been a staple in their documented memories for over a decade. Sally, who’s love with Super 8 film goes so deep, that she actually INVENTED a device that projects Super 8 reels while spinning a song from a vinyl record, It’s the IRL version of what I create for couples.

They hosted their wedding at the beautiful Leña Restaurante in downtown Toronto, the perfect spot to create a moody and romantic ambiance for their intimate selection of friends and family.  Don’t be fooled though, lying beneath the surface was a rambunctious group of dancing partying animals. There’s something endearing about watching a bride and groom unleash that level of intensity while dancing in a carefree wonder to the tracks of their coming of age story.

As told through the series of polaroid films in various albums scattered around the restaurant, the history of Sally & Luke’s story is one filled with good times with good people. I’m glad I got to be involved in creating a piece of those memories that will live along countless other’s on their personal timeline as their story continues to be told.

Presenting : Sally & Luke’s Super 8 wedding film shot at Leña Restaurante in Toronto.

Super 8 Wedding Video

I don’t consider myself a wedding videographer by any means but there’s something truly special and magical about Super 8 film that made me reconsider doing wedding films a few years ago. Kelti & Crispin didn’t want a large production for their intimate wedding, they wanted something that exuded nostalgia and emotion, so they approached me to document their wedding on Super 8 film in the hopes to confine and encapsulate the feeling and memory of their wedding.

Look, without a doubt the elements of this wedding can stand alone, and quite frankly, the interactions between Kelti & Crispin, and with their immediate family, displayed the importance of paying attention to the beauty in the subtleties. I got goosebumps watching their sincere display of affection towards one another, not just in the moment, but every single time I revisited the Super 8 footage I felt it. Add to the equation a beautiful backyard ceremony beneath a landmark tree and you’re un-ironically in the middle of a moment where you truly believe that life is a movie.

Growing up my dad showed our family numerous Super 8 videos of his adventures through California, key moments in my older sister’s youth and other random moments where our family was together for an occasion. I was always captivated by the beauty and hypnotizing sense that you’re viewing the world through imperfect memories, an enhanced version of ourselves viewed through an almost endearing light and quality. This was a feeling that always stuck with me and one I’ve strived to recreate for other people. Ultimately, once I grew up enough, I inherited my father’s Super 8 camera, he finally trusted me enough to let me use it and I immediately started documenting the people in my life and special occasions. Every time I got the film back I was deeply moved at how the most simple of moments were captured, a seemingly inexorable wave of emotions choked me up as I listened to simple music while watching the brief glimpses of my past lives flash on the screen. I told myself, THIS feeling is something I need to pass on to others, I need to create something that will impact people on this level and penetrating a deeper layer of sentiment and state of mind.

Naturally, the only way to do this was to create Super 8 films for weddings. A natural transition as a mainly analog film shooter, I decided to approach the creative direction with carefulness and intention, wanting to simply create moving pictures that enhanced the sense of living through the experience of being there. I guess it’s called Motion Picture Film for a reason.

I’m thrilled I’ll be creating dozens of Super 8 videos for couples throughout 2022 and I’m genuinely excited at the opportunity to apply my experience as a director and photographer to create a seamless narrative to tell people’s stories with earnest creativity.

Hotel Ocho Wedding

This chill and intimate wedding at Hotel Ocho in downtown Toronto was the perfect way to kick off this wild summer of weddings. Hotel Ocho is situated in Chinatown right in the heart of the downtown core of Toronto, surrounded by iconic and quintessential Toronto landmarks and neighbourhoods, it was the perfect area for Lauren & Phillip to hangout and soak in their wedding day. The vibrancy of the urban cityscape that Toronto has to offer is almost a character in the photograph which added a unique and fun layer to the photography and allowed the bride and groom an interesting environment to explore without having to walk more than 5 minutes from the wedding venue. Truly ideal and an extremely good setting to burn through a few rolls of film.

We kicked things off with a no-fuss first look on a quiet street around the corner (yes they exist in downtown Toronto!) Where the bride and groom got to show off their extremely cool and fashion-forward wedding day styles that included a dark green toned suit with pleaded pants and a vintage 1990’s wedding dress that made reminded me of an iconic look that Madonna would probably pull off.  The combination of their stylish presence and down to earth attitudes made photographing Lauren & Phillip an absolute breeze as they oozed coolness and fun as we walked around the neighbourhood casually taking photos. If you needed a sign to be a little bit extra on your wedding day look, to bring out the sunglasses and high fashion aesthetic, these two are the archetypes that all brides and grooms want to model themselves after if they’re looking to add a little something and create a real vibe for some cool wedding photos. Toronto is one of the coolest cities on earth so I really appreciated the bride and groom’s attitude to really lean into the overall vibe and energy of having a wedding in the grungy corner of Chinatown in the heart of the downtown core. I loved every second of it.

The ceremony was intimate and beautiful, surrounding themselves with their closest groups of friends and family members to witness the exchange of vows Lauren and Phillip didn’t hold back on the emotional magnitude of their written words. Both the bride and groom infused elements of their individual personalities into their vows while genuinely embracing the moment, Phillip even got to showcase his talents as a writer and utilized those skills to bring tears in the eyes of everyone in attendance. The sun was sunshine through the windows as they shared their first kiss and the audience roared with excitement at the sight of the newlyweds as they walked down the aisle and geared up for what was to be an eventful and fun-filled party.

The mood of the reception mirrored the rest of the wedding day, low-key, fun and intimate. Guests were treated to a series of impactful speeches and a fun trivia game that tested their chops in how well they truly knew the couple. The setting for dinner at the upstairs portion of Hotel Ocho provided a romantic setting that felt like an elevated candle-lit dinner party hosted among friends but in reality dinner was just a stepping stone for what was to come as the fun (and stylish) group of guests were ready to thrown down on the dance floor and what better way to set the tone and kick things off than with piñata? Both Lauren and Phillip took their swings at the piñata (Lauren nearly clipping my head in her first attempt haha) and as it burst at the seams and unleashed a series of candy, chips and other goodies, things got going and got rowdy in the best way possible. One of my favourite moments of the night was when the bride and groom stole a few of the masquerade masks from their photo booths and started to show-off some dance moves while looking like extras from Eyes Wide Shut, it was truly amazing and I’m glad I documented those candid and in-between moments.

To cap things off I took the bride and groom outside to finish off a roll of film and essentially treated it as a cool fashion shoot, letting the rush of the day sort of take over and unleash a more laid back and fun mood for the photographs. But as you’ll quickly tell when sifting through the photos, these two weren’t exactly difficult to photograph ; stylish, cool, down to earth, the epitomized the terms “anti-bride” and fashionable groom by just being themselves and giving me the opportunity to uninhibitedly capture a rawness and realness that was a reflection of their true selves.

2022 has led me to connect with the most like-minded couples I’ve ever had the privilege to work with and Lauren and Phillip are exhibit A of how lucky I truly am to work with the coolest people in Toronto.

Steam Whistle Brewing Wedding

Michelle & Adrian’s wedding at the Steam Whistle Brewery in downtown Toronto was one of the more memorable experiences I had as a wedding photographer in 2021, and considering how amazing of a year I had, that’s definitely saying something.

I got to know these two quite intimately leading up to their wedding day, spending time with them (and their pup) in their home, tasting some exotic tequila and wine before exploring their surrounding neighbourhood, it was an amazing ice breaker and created a genuine friendship between us that brought forth a level of trust and comfort that is so integral to the work I do as a photographer. (If you wanna check out the resulting photos from our hangouts just CLICK HERE to check out our adventures - serves as a great introduction at just how cool and stylish this bride and groom are in their every-day life and not just on their wedding day).

Back to this incredible wedding day that was kick started with a casual hangout at Michelle’s brides maids’ house while Adrian and his life-long boys hung out smoking sheesha in their hotel room listening to Drake’s new album “Certified Lover Boy” as it just dropped a few days earlier. The vibe and tone for the afternoon was set and the bride and groom were scheduled to meet at the historical Union Station in downtown Toronto for their first look and to knock out a few photos before heading to Steam Whistle for their wedding ceremony and reception.

Looking back through the images, it’s impossible not to smile and feel absolutely wholesome seeing the cheer joy and emotion on Adrian’s face when he set eyes on Michelle for the first time. Naturally, Michelle looked breathtaking, rocking a beautifully simple and elegant dress that was both modern and stylish, an incredibly perfect find at Loversland, one of my favourite bridal boutiques in Toronto.  As I mentioned above and evidence of our first shoot together, Michelle and Adrian have an aura of effortless coolness, style that is genuine and true to who they are and they didn’t stray away from that for their wedding day looks. Combine that with the beautiful light and grandiose scenery of union station and you got yourself one hell of a recipe for timeless wedding photos.

Steam Whistle Brewery set the stage for the wedding but it’s the smaller handmade details that truly brought everything together in a way that was elegant and uniquely Michelle & Adrian. The bride having a knack for design and creative aesthetic created A LOT of things for the wedding; invitations, seating chart, table numbers, place cards, signage and even the cool modern ceremony backdrop, yes, that’s right, the bride made all those things herself and those details were incredibly thoughtful and memorable. Although I’m sure tackling such a task is arduous, Michelle told us she genuinely loved having a direct hand in those elements of her wedding and as far as I’m concerned, the hard work paid off as everyone in attendance spoke highly about the small details, most not even realizing that the bride was the creator.

There’s no denying that the ceremony was beautiful and sincere, the bride and groom exchanged personal and hand-written vows, prompting a few tears as both vows had a message deeply rooted in values and retrospection on the journey before their arrival in that very moment in time. As someone who was deeply entrenched in writing my entire life, I always have a fond appreciation for couples who can muster the willpower to write out how they feel and have the courage to then look their partner in the eye while revisiting those deep thoughts. It’s something I’ve always fond poetic in and of itself and seeing Michelle and Adrian exchange heartfelt words hit different and reminded me how much I enjoy that moment during a wedding ceremony.

As great as the ceremony was, the highlight of this wedding was undoubtably the reception and ensuing party. Both the bride and groom held their friends and family in high regards and after dealing with a tough pandemic year, it was a priority for Michelle and Adrian to throw the party of all parties. But, before people put their party hats on and before people went extra hard on the dance floor the guests in attendance were treating to the most incredible set of speeches that sprinkle a bit of sentiment and a lot of Comedy Central style roasting. A few embarrassing childhood photos made their rounds and the uproar of laughter could probably be heard at the neighbouring Roger’s Centre. I’ll let the photos of those moments speak for themselves and I won’t spoil anything here, but it’s certainly worth scrolling down for, I promise.

The atmosphere and ambiance were electric, the dance floor didn’t have a chance to recover because it was constantly in use, people living their best lives and in honour of Michelle and Adrian’s love. There are few places in the city where throwing an epic party like this is matched by the surroundings, but Steam Whistle offers up a cool space while being in view of the most iconic elements of downtown Toronto, it’s pretty much impossible to not be a in party mood when the vibrancy of the city is right at your helm, in plain sight from beginning to end. I wanted to make sure that within all the chaos of the evening that the bride and groom still got to enjoy a few quiet moments together, and what better time to do that then when the sun goes down and the bright city lights create an unmatched energy that was seeping through the bride and groom’s veins. There was something cinematic, romantic and beautiful about Michelle and Adrian living in the moment, beneath the moonlight. It was cool, natural and it led to some of my favourite images of the entire day.

Look, there’s a reason I had Michelle and Adrian over for dinner recently, we’re legitimately like minded, two pairs with similar outlooks on life, similar aesthetics and mentalities, it’s been beyond cool to connect with them and be part of their wedding day. I look forward to future hangouts where we eat great asian food and sip on unusual wines, I mean, what other small pleasures in life can bring friends such joy?

Anyway, enjoy this incredible wedding and hopefully you can live vicariously through these images.

Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery Wedding

Over the years I’ve gotten to photograph a few weddings in the Niagara on the Lake region but it never feels the same when I head out there, there’s always a feeling that my surroundings are fresh to the eyes and I’m always welcomed to some incredible landscapes provided by the countless wineries in the region.

This time around I got to explore the Sue Ann Staff Winery in the Niagara region, dear friends of mine decided to host their wedding there in the prime time between summer and fall, gracing me and Ryanne with the opportunity to come along for the ride and document the wedding from that rare perspective of friend’s with a camera. Our history with Lauren and Rob goes back nearly a decade. We all met playing varsity volleyball at Ryerson University and quickly got to know one another through the unique and special bond that athletes share during a rigorous season. Lauren and Ryanne played on the same squad, while Rob and I were teammates for the better part of 2 years. Rob was not only one of the best volleyball players I ever got to share the court with, but he was one of my favourite teammates and someone I could shoot the shit with and connect with off the court. Despite being 10 feet tall, Rob was always this sort of little brother to me and someone who understood me better than most, we shared great times in those impressionable days as broke students so for things to come full-circle and being involved in this huge occasion in Lauren and his life is absolutely special.

The rustic and laid-back atmosphere that the Sue Ann Staff Winery had couldn’t of been a more perfect scenario for this pair. Low-key and intimate, Lauren and Rob curated their wedding to be a fun experience for their guests and themselves as the day had a casual pace to it and the bride and groom created ample opportunity to soak in every moment of the wedding day. The winery gave us a few epic landscapes to explore thanks to the large outdoor space at our disposal, it gave Lauren and Rob every opportunity to share a few quiet moments together before the whirlwind of the wedding day took over.

The ceremony was emotional and intimate, a curated guest list of close friends and family provided an assembly of familiar faces and throwback stories to the glory years of our athletic primes during our tenures at Ryerson. Along with the good times and great conversation, we were also treated with one of those perfect days that combined a mix of sun and clouds, creating beautiful light and an even prettier sunset that had golden hues breaking through the purple skyline. Sue Ann Staff Winery was ideal for a wedding, the open landscapes and vineyards as far as the eye can see provided a painterly backdrop for the festivities and for the bride and groom to enjoy a brief escape into what seemed like an entirely different place, but really, it was just across the street.

There was something about seeing Lauren and Rob together, seemingly all grown up right before my eyes as I embarrassingly glanced at them through teary eyes like an older sibling reliving the good old days through my head, but what I also realized was how rare and genuinely special it is to share my abilities as a wedding photographer to be involved in the deeper layers of my friends’ wedding experience, involved in the fibres of people’s memories and how they will relive these moments over and over again for the rest of their lives. I used to feel uncomfortable at the thought of photographing a friend or family members nuptials, thinking to myself that the best case scenario was just to show up and just be a guest, but I’ve grown to realize being hired by your own friends or family is sort of the highest possible honour, the ultimate form of validation from the people who matter most in our lives, nothing beats that feeling, nothing feels better than being trusted to engage and be an active observing and hands on participant to a monumental occasion in people’s lives.

All that being said, I absolutely got to party and relive the glory days, and it was an unforgettable experience.
